Abstract:

Photographs taken by Russ and Anita Rosene during their many travels throughout the Americas. Subjects of photographic prints (PIC box 1 and AX folder) include Russ and Anita Rosene's 1947 hitchhiking trip across the U.S. and Canada, including some prints used by Life Magazine in their report on the Rosene's trip; photographs taken in Central America during a 1957 trip; photographs taken in Chihuahua, Mexico in 1960-1961, many credited to the Amerind Foundation; and a few commercial postcards depicting Avila Beach taken by Russ Rosene.
Thousands of slides taken by the Rosenes during decades of travel through California, the broader United States, Central America and South America. California locations include various National Parks, the San Luis Obispo and Avila Beach region of the the central coast, and many other areas. Alaska is extensively documented; other states and regions in the U.S., including numerous National Parks, are also depicted. The region of Canada that includes the Alaska Highway (formerly known as the Alaska-Canada or ALCAN Highway) is depicted. Central American locations extensively documented include Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras and Costa Rica, while Panama, El Salvador, Belize, Dominican Republic and Haiti are represented in smaller numbers. Chile is the only South American location extensively represented; a few slides were taken in Argentina, Peru and Colombia. Russ and Anita and their children Sandra and Chris are depicted throughout the collection. For some time the Rosenes were contracted by Ford Motor Company to travel with and photograph Ford vehicles in scenic tourist locations. Ford automobiles are therefore depicted throughout the collection.
